For all those who have been thinking about the in-built Fingerprint ID feature and the security threat it poses, they need to know more. This technology has a lot to offer on terms of security. Let us find out more about it, straight from the Apple officials.
· Contrary to the belief that the sensor would store your fingerprint it is the other way around. The images of your fingerprint will not be stored. Your actual images are not stored on a vulnerable spot on your device.
· It is nothing even close to the scans that actually scan your fingerprint. The functionality provided by Apple is different. It is more about storing your data that is encrypted in the iPhone processor. This data is converted in a digital signature that is used for unlocking your phone and authorizing your purchases made at App stores.
· For all those who are worried about data theft including your fingerprint ID, it is not possible. Due to the encryption and vault storage, it is literally impossible to get hands on your ID. Even after getting through the encrypted chip, the data cannot be accessed by another.
· Another thing to notice is that Apple is not storing your Touch ID on the server or iCloud. This way it is not available to any other avoiding the chances of security breach.
Security Measures
Apple has taken into account the following security measures for fool proofing the scanner and the Touch ID:
· The information related to the scan is encrypted and stored within an enclave of A7 chip. This means that your ID is secured from everything and locked away. It is more like a security vault where it is not available to any other app or software.
· Any other software will not be able to reach or retrieve information from anywhere when it is not available on iCloud or the Apple Server. It is not backed up anywhere from where it can be obtained by another.
· Knowing that the fingerprint data is not available to apps and software there are positive and negative aspects. The positive aspect is that a malware or a fake app will not be able to steal data. There is no developer access to the Touch ID as yet according to the Apple officials.
· For all those who are vying for enterprise use the restrain to developer access will refrain them from doing so.
· The use of Touch ID is for now limited to consumers not to the enterprise use. If you are looking forward to BYOD then your data and applications are safe.
· Another thing to know about the Touch ID is that you need to first create a passcode that will act as a backup. This passcode will help unlocking the phone when you reboot it. It will come handy when you have not unlocked your phone for 48hours. This ensures that only a user of the phone would be able to unlock it. The hackers or illegal access to the phone will be thwarted in their attempt.
The Touch ID is arguably the best feature incorporated in iPhone 5S but there are a few things that you might need to keep in account while using it:
· Sweaty fingers or thumbs will not be registered as the scanner will not be able to capture it.
· If you are using or trying to register your finger imprint then you should have not used a lotion, hand-cream, oil or water.
· If the finger or thumb that you are using is covered in a wound or a scar by surgery or accident then too the scanner will have trouble in reading it.
· It is advisable to use another digit.
